  • Select EndNote and then choose EndNote Program. A dialogue box appears asking you to open or create a reference library.
  • Click on Create a new EndNote library and click OK. A dialogue box will open, asking you to save your new library. Give it a name and save it to your documents.

Using EndNote with the Library Catalogue

  • Search for a book by title, author or keyword in the library catalogue.
  • Run your search and from the results save the reference(s) you want to export to Endnote using the Save button located in each result.
  • In the pop up screen under the Export link click on EndNote Desktop.
  • A dialogue box appears with the option to Open or Save File. Select Open and your references will be automatically imported into your library.

Using EndNote with Onesearch

  • Enter some search terms into the OneSearch box.
  • Run your search and from the results add the references you want to export to Endnote into the folder by clicking on the add to folder icon located in each record.
  • Now click on the Folder at the top of the screen which contains your selected references from OneSearch and select EndNote from the Export as menu.
  • A dialogue box appears with the option to Open or Save File. Select Open and your references will be automatically imported into your library.

Saving and Transporting your Library

If you need to move your library between computers, share your library or just create a back up you should save your library as a single compressed file. This will save the complete library, including the “.enl” file as well as its associated “.Data” folder and all of its contents. You can easily restore (unzip) the compressed library with EndNote.

  • Open your EndNote library. From the File menu, select Compressed Library.
  • Ensure that you have selected Create, with File Attachments and All References in Library. Use the file dialog box to save your library as an EndNote Compressed Library.
  • To restore your compressed library file, go to the File menu and select Open.
  • Locate your compressed EndNote library (.enlx) and click Open – this will extract the “.enl” file and the “.Data” folder to the same folder where the .enlx file is located.
  • Use EndNote to openthe “.enl” file as you normally would to use the library.
